I work at a large treatment center. Is this program suitable for my clinic?
M2 Substance is suited to larger practices. It allows for the consistent delivery of a standardized program, without requiring that all learning occur at the exact same pace. We offer multi-seat licenses so that groups of clients can use the program concurrently. In addition, the program’s administrative functions allow both for program oversight and for individual Clinical Supervisor roles.

What type of ‘approach’ or ‘treatment’ does this program use?
The M2 approach is considered a short-term cognitive behavioral approach, emphasizing rational-emotive methods. Time and again research has shown that cognitive behavioral methods are among the most effective for creating long-term change.

Because of the nature of web-delivered programming, the approach has been tailored to be brief, manageable, and focused on short-term goals.

How can I get a handle on what all my clients are learning from M2Substance?
The core of M2 Substance is our NeoModal™ Hub™, which offers extensive reporting capabilities. As well as offering detailed client reports to authorized administrators, the program creates useful metrics for program tracking and evaluation. It also includes pre and post-program tests an analytic report of changes.

Is this program considered ‘e-learning’?
M2 program designers have shown a commitment to proven practices that engage and challenge users. Your clients will find themselves engaged and motivated by a program design that creates a ‘back-&-forth’ interaction between themselves and the program. This interactive style of learning is so new, we coined the term NeoModal™ to describe it: the interaction itself is a key aspect of the learning process, and a key to learning retention. In addition, the choice of rich graphics, video and music, means that the program does not even remotely resemble ‘old school’ e-learning programs that dumped textbook facts and figures into the laps of confused users.

Facts alone often don’t change deeply ingrained human behaviors, emotional engagement does.

What will each module, or session entail?
Most modules consist of about 15 – 20 minutes of computer time in the form of instruction, video demos, interactive exercises, games, etc. and then an assigned thought experiment, or some other ‘homework exercise. Each homework exercise is included to keep your client thinking about what the module tried to convey, and to practice applying it to his or her ‘real’ world.

Is the program difficult to complete?
The program itself is easy to navigate: it’s the thinking behind it that’s difficult. The team behind M2 Substance designed the program so that users would really think about the issues raised, and try to do the homework in a meaningful way. How hard that is to do depends on your client and the seriousness of the problem they’re developing, or have developed, and their desire and motivation to change. Changing any self-harming habit or behavior is hard, so, clients will benefit from your supervision and help.

Why should I believe this program can help?
The program is based on the work and ideas of a multidisciplinary group of professionals who believe in the value of good intervention. They also understand the difference between approaches to helping people that sound good, and those that are tested. The individual ideas (cognitive and cognitive-behavioral theories and methods) that make up the M2 Substance program are well-tested through research.

Though the M2 Substance program itself hasn’t been around long enough yet for serious scientific testing, we are committed to evaluating the program and are interested in working with partners to develop and conduct such tests. If you and your organization are interested and capable of participating in outcomes studies, please contact us at the provided coordinates. We will publish experimental findings as they become available.

Do my clients have to do the homework?
No. But if they don’t do it, it’s really a lot less likely that they’ll change their bad habits of thinking and acting. Doing the program without the homework is a bad idea, unless they’re doing the program in conjunction with your professional intervention. If they’re doing the program under your supervision, they should be participating in the between-session assignments assigned to them by you. If you determine that the built-in homework assignments are desirable, you can administer the program accordingly.

Is there some way to tailor the program to my clients?
Included with the M2 Substance program is our NeoModal™ Hub, which among its functions, allows you to tailor the program to each unique client. You can control and review session length, homework, and certain other activities. Since only the administrator, or assigned supervisors have access to these reports, patient-client confidentiality is maintained.

Is there anyone who would not benefit from this program?
The really young (under age 13); the old (over 25!); those who can’t function in English (other language versions are now being considered); those in crisis – M2 is not a substitute for appropriate medical, social, or psychological interventions by trained, accountable professionals; people who are coerced or forced into using it by others; those who are currently abusing substances without any period of acute detox; those whose trained health professionals advise against it.
